On a cold, windy February morning on Shinnecock Bay, on the South Fork of Long Island, N.Y., Ricky Sea Smoke fished for clams from the back of his 24-foot boat. The fisherman, whose real name is Rick Stevens, expertly sorted through haul after haul as they were dumped onto the sorting rack. Among the usual littlenecks and cherrystones were delicacies that would make chefs swoon: sweet, plump razor clams; vermilion-fleshed blood clams; and dainty limpets (also known as slipper snails) with their inimitable saline, buttery flavor. Depending on the season, fishers like Mr. Stevens can bring in even more treasures, like scallops, squid, blue crabs, striped bass, mackerel and skate. But almost none of them are available locally.

MuseumsMuseums are obvious celebrations of the past, and in Las Vegas, these two museums have direct links to the Vegas of old. At the Neon Museum, Old Vegas is showcased in the form of neon signs. Other attractionsSeveral other sights and destinations around Las Vegas keep the city’s past alive in this modern age. At one point every casino in Las Vegas had a machine like this one; today this is the only coin-operated iteration left. Finally, the most recognizable throwback to Old Vegas might be the neon “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign at the south end of the Las Vegas Strip near Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.

STRONG PASSIONS: A Scandalous Divorce in Old New York, by Barbara WeisbergThe touch of a hand from two centuries ago can spark powerful emotions in the present. In Jane Austen’s novel, their chemistry leads to marriage and the elevation of the heroine’s fortunes. But in New York in 1860, a real-life brush of hands “ignited a fiery and forbidden passion” between members of two prominent families. Their romance wrecked a marriage, destroyed the woman’s reputation and resulted in a lurid divorce trial whose salacious details filled pages of the nation’s newspapers. In “Strong Passions,” her riveting reconstruction of a scandal that “rocked genteel society,” Barbara Weisberg reassembles the story with the clear determination to treat both sides equally, and without leering.

We don't know what we want. The rails are too significant to ignore even as the bond market seems to rely, I would say, wrongly, on the broader data. A smaller bloc strongly preferred a pre-Trump and un-Trump-like Republican; this has become the Nikki Haley constituency. This left a crucial middle bloc, maybe 40 percent of the party in my own guesstimation, that was Trump-friendly but also seemingly persuadable and open to another choice. These voters liked Trump’s policies more than his personality. They didn’t like some of his tweets and insults, so they mostly just tuned them out. But they acknowledged that he didn’t always seem entirely in charge of his own administration, fully competent in the day-to-day running of the government.

After several twists and turns this year, stock investors are in a celebratory mood. The reversal has come as investors have cheered signs that the Federal Reserve has finished raising interest rates, the primary tool in the central bank’s effort to slow inflation. Those high rates have been a drag on corporate valuations because they raise costs for consumers and companies and give allure to investments outside the stock market. Jerome H. Powell, the Fed chair, appeared to add to investors’ bullish mood on Friday, suggesting that the economy continues to cool as expected. “We’re getting what we wanted to get, we now have the ability to move carefully,” Mr. Powell said at an event.

And gas prices are down around $3 a gallon ahead of this critical week for holiday driving, while mortgage rates have backed off their recent highs. There is little expectation the Fed will raise interest rates in December at its next meeting after being on pause since July and two benign inflation reports last week. Such a benign inflation outcome would increase our conviction that the coming recession will be mild.”It will be a shortened week for economic data and market activity. The week starts with a read on the economy from the Conference Board’s leading economic index. Still, the overriding narrative at the moment is one that sees a slowdown bringing further relief on the inflation front and continued, if weaker, growth ahead for the economy.

A recently edgy bond market gobbled all that up. Funds' bonds allocation in November soared 18 points over the month to leave them net 19% overweight - almost 3 standard deviations above long-term averages. Asset managers' overweight bond positions - or at least those in government bonds and U.S. Treasuries - tends to be mirrored by big short positions in Treasury futures among speculative hedge funds. What to watch for in Tuesday’s inflation numberThe markets have rebounded from their fall swoon — with the S&P 500 up more than 7 percent over the past two weeks — as investors grow more optimistic that the Fed is done raising interest rates. That conviction will be put to the test with a new batch of inflation data this week, starting with Tuesday’s Consumer Price Index data at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. It arrives amid deep divisions on Wall Street over the Fed’s next move, and as inflation weighs heavily on President Biden’s poll numbers. Tuesday’s figure could signal that progress on inflation is slowing. That’s no better than the September figure, and well above the Fed’s 2 percent target.
